Contingencies
Accounting for Uncertainty
A contingency is an existing situation involving uncertainty that will ultimately be resolved by future events. Loss contingencies require careful evaluation because some are recognized as liabilities while others are only disclosed in the notes to the financial statements.
Note
Both the likelihood of loss and the ability to estimate the amount determine the appropriate accounting treatment.
Summary
Contingency accounting balances faithful representation with uncertainty by applying different recognition rules based on probability.
