Noncontrolling Interest (NCI)

Ownership Less Than 100%

If the acquirer purchases less than 100% of the acquiree, the remaining ownership is called the noncontrolling interest. Under the acquisition method, the noncontrolling interest is measured at fair value on the acquisition date.
