Net Asset Classifications
Two Classes of Net Assets
Current U.S. GAAP requires not-for-profit organizations to classify net assets into two categories based on donor-imposed restrictions. These classifications help users understand which resources are available for current operations.
Note
Older CPA materials may reference unrestricted, temporarily restricted, and permanently restricted net assets. Current GAAP uses only two classifications.
Summary
The classification of net assets depends entirely on donor restrictions.
