Recognized vs. Nonrecognized Subsequent Events
Understanding the Difference
Recognized subsequent events provide additional evidence about conditions existing at the balance sheet date and require adjustment. Nonrecognized events relate to conditions arising after year-end and generally require disclosure if material.
Note
Type I events require adjustment because the underlying condition already existed on the balance sheet date.
Summary
Type I events adjust financial statements, while Type II events generally require disclosure only.
