Forecasts vs. Projections
Understanding the Difference
Although both present future-oriented information, forecasts are intended for general use and reflect management's expected future actions. Projections are intended for limited use and evaluate hypothetical situations or 'what-if' scenarios.
Note
Neither forecasts nor projections guarantee future financial performance.
Summary
The nature of the assumptions determines whether prospective information is a forecast or projection.
