Direct vs. Indirect Method
Preparing Operating Cash Flows
The operating section of the statement of cash flows may be prepared using either the direct or indirect method. Both methods produce the same operating cash flow but present information differently.
Note
The indirect method adjusts net income for depreciation, gains, losses, and working capital changes.
Summary
Both methods report the same operating cash flow, but the indirect method is more commonly used.
