Introduction to Tax Compliance & Planning
What Is Tax Compliance & Planning?
Tax Compliance & Planning is the study of how individuals and businesses meet their legal tax obligations while making informed financial decisions that minimize tax liability within the boundaries of the law. In the CPA (USA) curriculum, this subject combines knowledge of federal tax laws, filing requirements, tax calculations, reporting standards, and ethical tax planning strategies.
Tax compliance focuses on correctly preparing and filing tax returns, paying taxes on time, maintaining proper documentation, and following Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations. Tax planning focuses on arranging financial activities in advance to legally reduce taxes, improve cash flow, and support long-term financial goals.
Note
Tax planning is proactive and occurs before transactions take place, whereas tax compliance is reactive and ensures all tax obligations are fulfilled correctly.
Summary
Tax Compliance ensures taxpayers follow tax laws, while Tax Planning helps them legally reduce tax liability through informed financial decisions.
