Closing Entries
Resetting Temporary Accounts
Closing entries transfer the balances of temporary accounts to retained earnings at the end of the accounting period. This prepares revenue and expense accounts to accumulate activity for the next period.
Note
Only temporary accounts are closed. Permanent accounts carry their balances into the next accounting period.
Summary
Closing entries prepare the accounting system for a new reporting period while preserving permanent account balances.
